Elie Wiesel was born on September 30th, 1928. He was born in Sighet, Maramures, but it is now called Sighetu Marmatie. Most of the time, his family spoke Yiddish; and sometimes German, Hungarian, and Romanian. Wiesel’s father, Shlomo, had a strong sense of humanism in his son. Shlomo encouraged his son to learn Hebrew and read literature, but his mother wanted him to read the Torah. Elie had three siblings, and all of them were girls, two older and one younger. His older sisters were Hilda and Beatrice, his younger sister was Tzipora. At the end of the war, Elie’s older sisters survived and were reunited with Elie, but unfortunately, his parents and younger sister didn’t make it.
In 1940, Romania lost the town of Sighet to Hungary. Wiesel’s family was put into one of the two ghettos in Sighet. Elie was separated from his sisters and his mother but he attended the same camp with his father. Both of them were forced to work in horrible conditions and they went to three different camps throughout the war. On January 29th, 1945, they marched to Buchenwald where Wiesel’s father was beaten by a Nazi suffering from exhaustion, dysentery, and starvation. And he was also beaten for food by other inmates. . At the end of the war, Elie’s older sisters survived and were reunited with Elie, but unfortunately, his parents and younger sister didn’t make it.
After the war, Elie taught Hebrew and was a choirmaster before he became a famous journalist. He learned French which he wrote frequently. Elie became involved with the Irgun, which is translating articles from Hebrew to Yiddish. Ten years after the war, he refused to write or talk about his experiences during the Holocaust. He met a French author named Francois Mauriac who persuaded him to write about his experiences. In 1960, Elie wrote the book “Night”, it sold just 1,046 copies in 18 months. The content of the book interested readers. “Night” was translated into 30 different languages, by 1997, the book had sold 300,000 copies and in March 2006, it sold about 6 million copies, just in the United States. That year, Oprah Winfrey chose this book for her book club.
