Why did the old man go after the fish?
I think the old man went after the fish for respect. The other fisherman made fun of him because he was old. He wants to earn respect from them by catching a fish and not just telling them but proving that he can do what they can, catch a big fish. The old man wanted respect from everyone.

Yankees
The New York Yankees started playing in 1923, when they beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 in their new stadium. Babe Ruth hit a HomeRun in the first game. In 1932, Lou Gehrig hit 4 homeruns in one game and became the first and only Yankee to do this great achievement, the final score was an astonishing 20-13 in Philadelphia. On May 14, 1941, the great Joe DiMaggio had a 56 game hitting streak but it ended in Cleveland, losing 3-1. DiMaggio went on to hit safely for 16 straight games, this gave him 72 hits in 73 games. That same year, he died from a disease named after him, only age 37.
Santiago
Santiago loves baseball and the Great DiMaggio. Joe DiMaggio is one of the greatest baseball players in baseball history. Santiago is always talking about baseball, on the boat, while fishing, and talking to Manolin. Maybe Santiago played baseball as a kid, if he did or didn't, he is always going to love baseball.
