By: Tanner McColley
Susan Eloise Hinton was born on July 22, 1948. Hinton is known for her young adult novels, one of her more popular novels is “The Outsiders”, which she wrote when she was in high school. In 1988, she received the inaugural Margaret Edwards Award for her contribution in writing for teens. “The Outsiders” was her first novel and she wrote it in her point of view. The book was inspired by the two rival gangs at her high school, The Socs and the Greasers. The book has sold over 14 million copies and sells about 500,000 each year. Hinton also worked on movies and TV shows including Ice Age: The Meltdown and Supernatural.
Hinton’s husband got sick of her being depressed all the time so he made her write 2 pages a day if she wanted to get anywhere. She read a lot of Literature and wanted to be better, she wanted to make sure every single sentence in her books were exactly right. In 1975, she published “Rumble Fish” as a novel; this novel was the shortest novel she had published. One viewer said that it was her best book, but one said it was going to be her last. Her book “Tex” was published 4 years after that, it received great reviews. Hinton didn’t write another novel for 9 years because her son Nick was born. A few years after “Tex” was published, a chain of significant events occurred. In March 1983, “The Outsiders” was released as a movie. The following August, Nicholas David was born. A couple of months later, the movie “Rumble Fish” was released. In October 1985, she released “Taming the Star Runner”. It was the first book that Hinton published that wasn’t in first-person.
S.E Hinton currently lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma with her husband David, her son Nick is away for college. Hinton is a very private person, and she’s very uncomfortable talking about her personal life. Her hobbies are horse-back riding; she has shown both jumping and dressage. Hinton reads constantly and she occasionally takes a class at the university. She said that a writer’s life if boring, she usually starts a story on paper then transfers it onto the computer. Hinton lives a normal life and like a normal mother, cooks for the family and cares for them. She says that she has a great husband and a wonderful son, and she said that she doesn’t want to invade their privacy by saying anything else about them, unless she wants to write about them.
